Boho Living Room Ideas: The Rug, the Colors and the Layers

Color, tiles or a plain base, then the layers.

In a boho living room, the rug does one of three jobs: it brings warm, painterly color, brings tile and floral pattern, or holds still as a plain wool base under a busy room. Choose the job from what the room already has, keep the rug a step lighter or darker than the sofa, and size it to the seating.

Key takeaways

  • A boho living room rug does one of three jobs: brings warm color, brings tile and floral pattern, or holds still as a plain base under a busy room.
  • Keep the rug a clear step lighter or darker than the sofa: an ivory-ground rug under a saturated sofa, a deeper, warmer rug under a pale one.
  • To layer rugs, lay a flat-woven, jute or short-pile base sized to the seating, then a patterned pile rug on top with 30 to 45 cm of base showing.
  • A 275x365 cm base under a 185x275 cm rug shows 45 cm of border on every side.
  • A hand-knotted wool rug keeps its pattern because the color runs through the pile, where a printed synthetic rug wears its design away with the surface.

What is a boho rug?

A boho rug looks collected rather than bought as part of a set: warm color, a loose, freehand pattern that does not repeat perfectly, and texture you can see and feel, often finished with tassels. Moroccan wool rugs are the original source of much of the look, which is why so many boho rugs borrow their diamonds, tiles and painterly fields.

A boho room rests on four things, in order of weight: a warm, patterned floor, living green, materials with a visible grain or weave (rattan, cane, raw wood, clay), and generous textiles. The rug is the largest textile in the room, so it sets the palette the rest follows. Without it, the plants and baskets read as clutter.

Modern boho is the same idea with fewer objects and cleaner lines: a plain or softly patterned wool rug, one or two strong pieces of furniture, more empty wall. It is the version that suits a small apartment or a room that has to stay calm.

Start by deciding the rug's job. Three Zarbish collections map to the three jobs.

Pick the job before the rug. Plain walls and a pale sofa want color or pattern from the floor; a gallery wall, a printed sofa or a full bookcase want the floor quiet.

Three boho living room rug ideas

Three ideas cover most boho living rooms: a colorful Boujaad rug, a floral or tile Berber rug, and a plain Beni Ourain rug. The colorful and patterned ones are gathered under boho rugs.

Colorful boho rugs: warm color from Bloom

Colorful boho rugs bring warmth first, and Bloom is where to start. Its designs come from Boujaad rugs, the looser, color-led style of the Moroccan plains, and they read as painted rather than plotted, which is the boho instinct exactly. The rest of the Bloom collection keeps the same relaxed hand.

Ayyur, the Amazigh word for moon, sets one wide ivory diamond on a field of coral and pink. Put it under a pale blue sofa and a round orange table, with palms and a vase of roses nearby: the floor becomes the warmest surface in the room, and the plants supply the green the rug leaves out.

Nouar, the Moroccan Arabic word for flowers, scatters loose diamonds and crosses across an ivory field: a mustard diamond holding a pale-blue cross, a rust-red one, and peach-pink diamonds outlined in stepped black and mustard dots. Nothing lines up perfectly, and that is the point. Under a pale pink scalloped sofa and a rust velvet chair, here in the round, it brings the looseness of boho without one extra object, and the ivory ground keeps the room light.

Floral and tile boho rugs: pattern from Mozaik

Mozaik suits the side of boho that borrows from tilework, garden plans and patchwork. Its designs come from Berber heritage and are composed as repeats, so pattern arrives with order underneath, which a room already full of plants and objects needs. The Mozaik collection holds the tile and floral designs.

Agdal, named for the walled garden of Marrakech, sets stepped coral flower-lozenges with ivory outlines and ochre centers over a burgundy middle band and deep teal-blue ends. In the cover room, beside a mustard velvet sofa, a black leather chair and a stone wall, the cool ends keep a warm room from tipping into orange, and the burgundy repeats the marble of the coffee table.

Doukkala, named for the farming plain south of Casablanca, is patchwork: soft-edged olive and dusty pink squares alternating across ivory, with small navy dots between them. The olive repeats the sofa and the plants, the navy repeats the arc lamp. Beside a tall palm and a terracotta table, the rug looks chosen for the room rather than bought for it, which is the whole ambition of the look.

Neutral boho rugs: a plain base from Dune

When the walls are full or the textiles are busy, the rug should hold still. Dune rugs are Beni Ourain rugs in solid colors, all texture and no motif, and the Dune collection is also the base to layer a patterned rug on.

Argan, named for the tree of the Souss valley, is a plain tan-brown field with no motif or border. Under a cream bouclé sofa and two low bouclé ottomans, beside a wall of books, it is modern boho at its quietest: warm, tactile and complete without pattern on the floor.

Should the rug be lighter or darker than the sofa?

A boho rug reads best a clear step lighter or darker than the sofa, never the same depth. Under a saturated or dark sofa, choose a rug with a light ground; under a pale sofa, choose a rug with deeper, warmer color. The rug can still carry the sofa's color as a minor note, which is what ties the two together.

The pairing comes in three versions:

  • Saturated sofa, light-ground rug. Doukkala's ivory under the olive sofa. The sofa stands out, and the rug repeats its color in the pattern.
  • Pale sofa, warmer rug. Nouar's pink and mustard under the pale pink sofa. The floor takes the color the sofa only hints at.
  • Dark sofa, lighter plain rug. A plain camel field under a forest green sofa. The rug sits between the sofa and the floor in depth and warms both.

The same logic applies to the floor under the rug: a clear step lighter or darker, never the floor's own tone. The full method for building a room from the rug's palette is in pull three colors from the rug.

How to layer rugs in a boho living room

To layer rugs, lay a large, flat base sized to the seating, then a smaller patterned rug on top with an even band of the base showing around it. The base does the size work, the top rug does the color, and the band of base in between is what makes the layers look intentional rather than accidental.

  1. Size the base to the seating. It holds at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs, usually a 245x305 cm or a 275x365 cm.
  2. Keep the base flat. A flat-woven rug, jute, or a wool rug in short pile, 1 cm. A thick rug stacked on another thick rug rocks underfoot and lifts at the edge; a pile rug sits flat on a flat base.
  3. Choose the top rug two sizes down, so 30 to 45 cm of base shows along the sides. The table below gives the common pairs.
  4. Let one rug lead. Plain base, patterned top, or the other way round; two busy rugs fight.
  5. Set the top rug square or turn it. Square to the sofa reads calm; turned a few degrees off-center reads looser and more boho. Keep the band of base visible on every side either way.
  6. Put a rug pad under the base on a hard floor.

Layering also rescues a rug that is too small for the room: put a larger flat base under it and it stops floating. Finish the room around the layers with one wood grain, one weave such as rattan or cane, green at two heights, and textiles in the rug's own colors: linen, a knitted throw, a flat-woven cushion. The full method, including a rug on carpet, is in how to layer rugs.

Boho rugs room by room

Each room sizes a boho rug to its own furniture and picks the pile by how the floor is used. Where a room calls for a runner or a circle, we recompose the design for that shape rather than cropping it from the rectangle.

  • Living room. Front legs of the seating on the rug: a 245x305 cm for most sofas, a 275x365 cm for sectionals. Any pile height.
  • Bedroom. A boho rug for the bedroom shows at least 45 cm past the sides and foot of the bed: a 245x305 cm under a queen, a 275x365 cm under a king. Or a runner on each side, 80x245 cm beside most beds. A Bloom rug at the foot of the bed warms the first step of the morning.
  • Dining room. The rug extends at least 60 cm past the table on every side, so pulled-back chairs stay on it. Choose short pile, 1 cm, so the chairs slide. A Mozaik grid gives the chairs a rhythm.
  • Entry and hallway. A boho runner carries the palette to the front door, in short pile so the door clears it. Ideas in runner rug ideas.
  • Reading corner or under a round coffee table. A boho round rug, at least 45 cm wider than the table; under a round dining table, 120 to 150 cm wider, so the chairs stay on it. When a circle beats a straight edge is set out in when to use a round rug.

Is boho out of style?

The catalog version of boho dates quickly: the printed polyester rug, the macramé set, the room bought in one order. The collected version does not, because it was never a product to begin with. A handmade wool rug in warm, earthy color is the part of the look that outlasts each round of trends, and the part a room keeps when the cushions change.

Why a wool boho rug lasts

Much of what sells as a boho rug is a pattern printed onto a thin synthetic face, so the design wears away with the surface. A Zarbish rug is knotted by hand in 100% natural wool, so the color runs through the pile rather than sitting on it, and the wool ages beautifully. The natural dyes are fixed so the color does not transfer or shift with use.

The case for wool against a machine-washable print is made in full in wool vs washable rugs.

Start with the rug that does your room's job, then let the room collect around it. Next: decorating around a colorful rug.
