Blossom on dark twigs laid in rows on the sand, counted. Khamsa is five in Arabic, and this checkered Berber runner is counted too: square tufts in rows, a dash between each pair. Weavers once counted it out from memory. Zarbish knots it now.
Three squares across, linked by dashes, repeat down the length like the rungs and rails of a ladder, and the pattern stops short of each end, leaving a plain margin. The squares are tied in a wool softer than the ground and sit a little above it.
