Plum and white, checkered the way only a fritillary is. Tirra is writing in Amazigh, and this checkered Berber rug reads like a page: squares where the hand hurried, bars where it slowed. Weavers once kept the page by heart. Zarbish makes it now.
Five or six tones share the checker, and the deep ones are placed so that the eye finds diagonals running through the grid. Up close every square is a slightly different size, and the bars at the edges are tied in the deepest wool, which makes the border read heavier than the middle.
