Minimalist Rugs

No: a minimalist room asks the rug for texture, not pattern, and a solid olive, charcoal or terracotta keeps the same calm as ivory. Look at plain solids and carved pile, or read warm minimalism. Pattern is allowed when it is nearly invisible: a single fine line or two close tones in a grid keep the discipline, as long as the contrast stays low.

Few pieces, each in a strong material: a low oak or walnut frame, a stone side table, matte black steel, linen and wool. For the Japanese and Scandinavian blend, read Japandi living rooms.

Flat solid if the room already has texture, carved if it does not. In a room of smooth paint, glass and lacquer, a carved rug such as Hamada or Bejmat adds the one texture missing. The solid ivory rug has a long history, told in what a Beni Ourain rug is.

Stay at least two shades away from it: a camel rug on honey oak disappears, but on dark walnut or gray concrete it frames the room. A rug in the floor's own tone reads as carpet, not as a piece you chose.
