How dark should a brown rug be?

Let the room decide. Chocolate grounds a pale room and a light floor, while camel, or ivory with brown lines, keeps things airy. Brown comes as a solid, carved, in lines and in checks.

What decor styles suit a chocolate brown rug?

Mid-century, warm minimalist and 1970s-leaning rooms, with walnut, teak, cane, bouclé and cognac leather.

Will a brown rug work on a dark wood floor?

Only with contrast: chocolate on espresso floorboards merges into one dark plane, so pick a brown with ivory or camel in it, or a carved surface. On pale oak, tile or concrete, a solid brown looks its best.

Which rooms suit a brown wool rug best?

Living rooms, studies and busy family spaces: brown hides daily wear without charcoal's chill, under a hard-used sofa or a desk in an office. In a small, dim bedroom, a brown and ivory design keeps the space open.

How do I keep a brown rug from making the room look dated?

Pair it with fresh colors rather than more browns: chocolate with blush, sage, cream or dusty blue looks current.

Is chocolate wool dyed, and does it hold its color?

No: chocolate is the fleece's own color, so that wool is left undyed and the brown runs through the whole pile. An accent color in a design is dyed with non-toxic dyes, fixed so the color does not transfer or shift with use. Turn the rug now and then in strong sun; the care guide covers the rest.

Is a brown rug warm or cool, and does it matter?

Warm, always, and the shade sets how much. Camel and walnut carry a little red and look their best with cream walls, brass and oak; chocolate is the most neutral brown and takes cooler company, so it holds under a gray sofa where camel would clash.

A design you like in another color can be knotted in chocolate or camel instead: open it and change the colors on its page. Change the colors on the page and see a preview of your rug at once. The colors you approve are the ones the weavers use.
