About this rug

Squares of brown stone in a grid. The Tadla is the irrigated plain below the Atlas, and the sculpted Beni Mrirt rug brings it indoors: raised plots, water paths cut flat between. Weavers once knotted fields this level. Zarbish carves the plots today.

The checker is uneven: dark squares sit where you expect pale ones and the other way round, and up close each square has a slightly different height, as if cut on a different day. The pale channels are firm under the fingers.
