About this rug

Mud cracked into plates, each its own shape. Akal is earth in Amazigh; this sculpted Beni Mrirt round rug brings it inside: plates of raised wool, the cracks carved to the base. Weavers once knotted the field plain, from memory. Zarbish carves it today.

A chain of diamonds runs up the middle of the circle, with irregular cells either side, and the channels between them are flat and firm. The raised cells are soft and a little domed, and the binding cuts the outer ones mid-shape.

The story

How we made Akal

Mud cracked into plates, each its own shape. Akal is earth in Amazigh; this sculpted Beni Mrirt round rug brings it inside: plates of raised wool, the cracks carved to the base. Weavers once knotted the field plain, from memory. Zarbish carves it today.
