A round rug is an area rug woven as a circle, sized by diameter rather than by width and length. It works when the furniture in a room is centered on a point: a round table, a pendant, a corner chair, the foot of a bed. Under a long sofa or in a narrow hallway, a rectangle wins.
The rule
A round rug needs a center. Give it one and it looks decided. Put it in the middle of a room with nothing to answer to and it looks accidental, which is why most round rugs fail in real rooms. The center can be a round dining table, a pendant or a chandelier, an armchair in a corner, the foot of a bed, or a play zone on a nursery floor. Where it loses
The honest half of the answer. A round rug usually fails under a long rectangular sofa or a square-cornered sectional: the straight back and the curve argue, and the rug reads as an afterthought. It fails in a narrow hallway, where a runner is simply the right shape for the passage. It fails under a rectangular dining table, where the table corners hang over bare floor. And it fails wherever it sits off center with no fixture, table or chair to explain the position.
One size up
A circle covers about a fifth less floor than the square that would contain it, so a round rug ordered at the width of the rectangle you nearly chose arrives looking small. Go one size up. Then check it on the floor before you order:
- Tie a pencil to a string, cut to half the diameter you are considering.
- Pin the free end where the center of the rug will sit.
- Draw the circle with painter's tape.
- Live with it a day, pull the chairs out, walk the route you always walk, then order.

Pile and tassels
Under a dining table, choose short or medium: chairs have to slide and crumbs have to vacuum out. Beside a bed, in a nursery or under a reading chair, medium or shag is where a circle earns its keep, because that is the floor you stand on barefoot. Tassels are optional on every shape, round included, and they sit outside the stated size: about 4 in, 10 cm, beyond the diameter, which matters when the rug lands near a door swing. Rounds by collection
We weave rounds at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 ft, and to any diameter in between, which is the part that decides a room at a 54 in table. Your questions
Does a round rug work under a rectangular sofa?
Usually not. The straight back and square arms fight the curve, and the rug reads as accidental rather than chosen. A rectangle wins there. A round rug wins when the sofa is curved, or when the seating is gathered around a table or a pendant instead of a wall.
Can a round rug go under a bed?
Yes. Center it on the bed's midpoint so a crescent of wool shows past the foot and both sides, which wants a larger diameter. Or use a smaller circle at the foot of the bed or beside it, where your feet land in the morning.
What size round rug for a round dining table?
Table diameter plus at least 48 inches, ideally 60, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. That puts most four-seat tables at 7 or 8 ft and most six-seat tables at 9 or 10 ft. The size guide lists the pick per table size.
Do tassels count in the diameter?
No. The stated size is the woven rug. Tassels add about 4 in, 10 cm, beyond it, and they are optional on every Zarbish shape, round included. If the rug lands near a door swing, measure with the tassels included before you order.
