Rug sizes UK
Rug sizes in cm
Start from the furniture, not the walls. Most lounges take 200 x 290 cm.
The three rules
- 01
Go bigger. Between two sizes, take the larger one: a rug that is too small shrinks the whole room.
- 02
Anchor the furniture. Pieces standing on the rug read as one group; around it, they scatter.
- 03
Let the floor breathe. Leave 20 to 45 cm showing around the rug where the room allows.

Quick answer
Most lounges take 200 x 290 cm, smaller ones 160 x 230 cm, and open-plan rooms 240 x 340 cm or 300 x 400 cm.
By sofa
With the long side along the sofa, a two-seater sits well on 160 x 230 cm, a three-seater on 200 x 290 cm and a corner sofa on 240 x 340 cm or 250 x 350 cm.
All legs on
Every seat stands on the wool with 15 to 30 cm to spare. It takes 240 x 340 cm in most rooms and 300 x 400 cm in big ones.
Front legs on
Only the front legs of the sofa and chairs touch the rug, which ties the group together in a smaller room.
Floating
The rug holds the coffee table with the seats just off its edge: 140 x 200 cm or 160 x 230 cm.
Quick answer
Laid across the bed, a double takes 160 x 230 cm, a king 200 x 250 cm and a super king 200 x 290 cm.
Under the bed
Aim for at least 45 cm of rug on each side. It sits under the lower two-thirds of the bed, clear of the bedside tables.
Beside the bed
A runner on one or both sides: 70 x 200 cm for most beds, 80 x 150 cm in a small room.
At the foot
A 120 x 170 cm across the end of the bed, or a round of 120 or 150 cm at one corner, half under.
Quick answer
Add 120 cm to the table's length and to its width, then take the next size up.
That keeps 60 cm of rug on every side, so a chair pulled back stays on with all four legs.
- A 120 x 75 cm table for four takes 200 x 250 cm.
- A 185 x 100 cm table for six takes 240 x 340 cm.
- A 245 x 105 cm table for eight to ten takes 300 x 400 cm.
- A round table takes a round rug 120 cm wider: 200 cm for an 80 cm table, 250 cm for one up to 130 cm.
- Keep the pile short so chairs slide, and leave off the tassels where they pull back.
Measure the hall at its narrowest point and leave 8 to 15 cm of floor each side: 70 cm suits most terraced halls, 80 cm a wider one. For the length, stop just short of the doorways with 70 x 200, 80 x 250 or 80 x 300 cm. A stair runner is knotted to your stair width and run.
Kitchen
An 80 x 150 cm at the sink or an 80 x 250 cm along the units, in short pile so the door clears it. Wool takes kitchen wear well.
Entrance and office
A square entrance takes 120 x 170 cm, clear of the door swing, or a 120 cm round, 150 cm under a pendant. A home office takes 160 x 230 cm, with the chair and the desk's front legs on it so the chair never rolls off.
Children's rooms
Quick answer
Most children's rooms and nurseries take 140 x 200 cm or 160 x 230 cm, with the play area fully on the rug.
Short pile takes toy traffic best.
How to measure for a rug
Measure the furniture
Note the width of the sofa, bed or table, then add the margin that room needs in the sections above.
Mark the floor
Tape the outline down and live with it for a day. Walk through, open the doors, pull out the chairs.
Check the doors
Measure the gap under any door that opens over the rug. Short pile stands 1 cm high, medium 2 cm, shag 3 cm.
Allow for tassels
They are optional and add about 10 cm beyond the stated size. Handwork keeps the knotted dimensions within 3 to 4 cm.
Measuring a circle
Take the diameter edge to edge through the centre. To see it on the floor, pin a string at the centre, cut it to half the diameter and walk it around.
Made to measure
